Whitebeam - Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Our topic for this term is 'Eager Explorers'

Have a look at our fantastic topic display!

This term our topic is 'Eager Explorers'. In this fantastic topic we will be going on a journey across the planet and discovering how explorers coped with intense cold, the lack of food and water, and much more. The Eager Explorers topic focus on the experiences of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. It asks the children to discuss what makes a person significant and consolidates their understanding of chronology by comparing the historical periods in which these great explorers lived.

Author of the Term

This term our focus author will be Anthony Browne. We love reading and sharing his stories. Have you read any of his books? Do you have a favourite book?

In our book corner we have lots of Anthony Browne books for the children to enjoy. Please try and read or share a book with your child each night, it makes such a difference!

Come and explore our fabulous reading area!

KS1 Homework

You will find a homework menu on DB Primary with themes under different subheadings: whole school themes, subject themes and topic themes. You need to choose one theme from each subheading.

Children are to complete one themed piece of homework once a fortnight. This will all be uploaded on DB Primary.

Your child can choose how they want to present their homework it can be a piece of art, writing, a presentation - it's entirely up to them.  Year 1 children are also expected to read daily, practise their sounds/ words/ spelling cards and practise their maths packs.

Phonics

The children love phonics lessons and really benefit from extra help at home. Please help your child to work on their sound and word cards at home. We will be working towards the Phonics Screening check in June. Attached below is an example of the sort of words your child will be expected to read.

Here you can have a look at some examples and phonics screening guidance :)

Online learning

As you are aware we will now be uploading  Chestnuts home learning on the website for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.   We will now aim to go live with our new platform on Monday which is very exciting!

A big thank you to those of you who spoke to Miss White on the phone today.  If she was not able to get through to you she will try again this week.  This is a great opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and talk about how you are all feeling.   Miss White has spoken to me about all the questions so far.  I will put an email together for you all with all the answers :)  I will explain how online learning will work and what it looks like for EYFS at Willowbrook.  The other classes have had ClassDojo through the previous lockdown so would understand the way we do things.  I will explain everything in an email so please do not worry.  Any questions after the email please just ask and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Many Thanks

Miss Cox :)

Today we will be using numicon to help us with our number work.   Just follow the PowerPoint to find out what to do.

Extension - This is a mixture of different numicon shapes.  Can you cut them out along the lines and put them in the correct order?  Once you have put them in the right order I would like you to explain your reasons.

Guided Reading:

So far this week you have predicted what our focus story could be about, discussed the characters emotions and followed instructions to make your very own scarecrow puppet.  Today I would like you to listen to the story that we have been looking at.  Once you have watched the story I would like you to draw your favourite part of the story and tell a grown up your reasons why you like that part of the story.  Just follow the link below.

Phonics: s-qu focus

In this focus game you will need to choose a set of sounds to practice.  It is called phonics pop and I am sure you will enjoy it! You listen to the target sound and pop the matching bubble.  See how quick you can be. Ready …….steady……go!

Topic - Picture News 1
For picture news we always look at a question and discuss it. It is related to current news in the world.  We do this as a whole class and/or in small groups. We then record our answers in different creative ways. What an interesting question this week………..

Should anyone be allowed to buy a pet?  What types of animals do people keep as pets?

What do you think? Pick something from the uploaded resources to explore at home. I can’t wait to hear what your ideas and thoughts are.

Guided Reading: Story swap

It is time for our own class story swap time to begin.  In school you have someone enter your classroom to read you a story.  You never know who it is going to be as it is a surprise.  You can do this at home.  Why don’t you make your very own story swap Rota!  Can you choose a book and read it in a different place to someone else? Can a member of your household choose a book and read it to you in a different place?  Each Wednesday it needs to be different and can be as creative as you like.  Have fun!

Phonics: s-qu focus

In this focus game you will read a variety of words using the sounds we have learnt in school.  Once you have read the word you need to press the matching picture.  You can even write them down in a list (as you are playing) for an extra challenge.  Good luck superstars!

Note* Please focus on the tab phase 3 sets 6-7

It is an exciting topic and I would like you to tell me what you already know.  Can draw all the things you already know about the sea and ask an adult to write what you say next to it.  We do this at the beginning of all our new topics.  It is called a topic title page.  You can use a plain piece of paper or use the word document provided just like we do at school.

Happy New Year to you all!

Today and tomorrow you will be using this outline on our school website for your day of learning at home.  I will be providing one Literacy session, one Maths session, one Guided Reading session, one Phonic session and one Topic session.  Please pick and choose what you would like to complete.  Please follow the steps provided under each heading and let me know if you need any extra support with your day of learning at home.   I will be introducing our new topic to the children on Wednesday when we start our new online platform.   It is a great topic and I am sure our little Chestnuts will be very excited!

Task 1 – Can I talk about keeping safe online?

This half term we have been learning all about Esafety. We have discussed how to keep safe online as we know this is very important.  We have been learning about these special steps to stay safe online.

* Always ask a grown up before you go on an ipad, laptop, computer or phone to access the internet.

*Always ask a grown up for help if you see anything strange or unusual.

*Always tell a grown up if something pops up on the screen.

*Do not download or install anything without asking a grown up first.

*Remember not all games and videos are for children.

*Do not talk to strangers online and do not tell them where you live.

*If you are ever unsure of what to do sing Buddy’s song, and always ask for help.

Buddy’s song – (sung to the tune of Frere Jacques)

Ask your grown up,

Ask your grown up,

Ask for help!

Ask for help!

Use your tablet safely,

Use your tablet safely,

Woof, woof, woof!

Woof, woof, woof!

Woof, woof, woof!

I would like you to watch Jessie & Friends, Episode 1 on the link below.

www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/jessie-and-friends-videos/

Discuss together - What did you think about the cartoon? Which were your favourite parts? How did Jessie feel when she watched ‘The Funny Tummy’ video?  How did she feel when she watched ‘The Happy Croccy’ video? How did her feelings change? How did she get help to feel better?

Finish by having fun singing along together at the end!

Task 2 – How do I celebrate Christmas?

We have been learning all about our families and how we celebrate Christmas.  Can you draw a picture of all the things you do to celebrate Christmas?

You could discuss these questions –

How do you decorate your home? What happens on Christmas morning? Who do you celebrate with? What is your favourite part of the day? Why? How do you feel on Christmas day?

Task 3 – Can I play a phonic game?

I would like you to play the phonics snake and ladders game.  A copy has been put in your child’s book bag.  Have fun!

Extra tasks

Please keep writing your numbers, key words, sounds and captions at home.  We are controlling the size of our writing and making sure our writing sits on the line.  Have you remembered your finger spaces?
